A Lasting Solution to End Worries: Nosebleed Treatment

Frequent nosebleeds that are difficult to stop and turn your daily life into a nightmare are no longer your fate. We identify the problematic blood vessel causing the bleeding with advanced camera systems (endoscopes) and seal it with pinpoint accuracy using modern methods, offering you a safe and peaceful life.

What Causes Nosebleeds (Epistaxis) and How Can They Be Resolved?

The inside of the nose has an extremely rich network of capillaries very close to the surface, which are responsible for warming and humidifying the air we breathe. These delicate vessels can rupture and bleed due to causes such as allergic sneezing, dry air, nasal deviation, high blood pressure, or the use of blood-thinning medications. Simple nosebleeds usually originate from the front of the nose, while severe, uncontrollable bleeds may originate from the back. In our clinic, we clearly locate the source of the bleeding with high-resolution cameras; we then permanently stop the bleeding by gently sealing the affected vessel with chemical cauterization (silver nitrate) or radiofrequency/bipolar devices.

Not blindly tamponing the bleeding, but finding the target and sealing it.

In the past, the most common mistake in patients presenting with nosebleeds was filling the nose with meters of gauze tampons without accurately identifying the source of the bleeding. This is both a very painful process for the patient and the bleeding usually resumes when the tampon is removed. My approach at Dr. Nurten Küçük is to pinpoint that single bleeding vessel with millimeter precision using high-resolution endoscopes and seal only that point. In this way, I both free my patients from those painful tampons and solve the problem at its root without damaging the tissue.

Endoscopic Pinpoint Diagnosis

The source of bleeding, even if it's in the furthest parts of the nose, can be pinpointed with millimeter precision using camera systems (endoscopes). No hidden or deep bleeding source is missed.

Painless Vascular Sealing (Cauterization)

The identified vein is painlessly sealed with chemical sticks (silver nitrate) or heat under local anesthesia (numbing spray). The procedure takes only a few minutes and is painless.

Instant Relief and Return Home

Once the blood vessel is sealed, the bleeding stops immediately. You can return home and resume your daily life the same day without needing hospitalization.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do first at home when my nose bleeds?

The biggest misconception in society is that tilting your head back is the correct way to treat bleeding. Tilting your head back causes blood to flow into your stomach, leading to nausea and vomiting. When bleeding occurs, tilt your head slightly forward, firmly grasp the soft part of your nostril with two fingers like a clothespin, and apply pressure continuously for 10 minutes while breathing through your mouth. Applying ice to the back of your neck or the bridge of your nose can also help by constricting blood vessels.

Absolutely not. Before the procedure, special cotton swabs containing local anesthetic are placed inside the nose to completely numb the area. You will only feel a slight touch or tickling sensation while the blood vessel is being sealed; there will be no pain or discomfort.

The specific blood vessel that was treated closes permanently and will not bleed again. However, if the patient continues to have underlying problems such as high blood pressure, uncontrolled use of blood thinners, or severe allergies, another sensitive blood vessel in a different part of the nose may rupture in the future. Therefore, treating the root cause of the bleeding is very important.

In children, the capillary network in the front of the nose (Kiesselbach plexus) is very superficial and quite sensitive. Even slight nose picking, hot air, or allergic sneezing can cause bleeding. These are usually benign bleeds and can be completely eliminated with a painless, instantaneous vascular sealing (silver nitrate) procedure performed in an outpatient setting.
