Say Goodbye to Persistent Odor That Ruins Your Social Life: Treatment for Bad Breath (Halitosis)
Is that stubborn bad breath, which persists despite brushing your teeth three times a day and using countless mouthwashes, stealing your confidence? We treat this problem, which causes you to distance yourself from others, not as a "lack of hygiene," but as a medical condition. By endoscopically identifying and eliminating the true source of the odor (tonsil stones, postnasal drip, or reflux), we give you the gift of fresh, clean breath all day long, allowing you to speak freely at close range.
What is bad breath (halitosis) and why doesn't brushing your teeth go away?
Halitosis isn't simply a matter of eating garlic or spices; it's a chronic and extremely unpleasant breath odor caused by sulfur-producing bacteria. Most patients complaining of bad breath first go to a dentist. If the problem isn't gum disease or cavities, the next address is definitely an ENT specialist. The biggest culprit for bad breath originating from ENT is... “"These are tonsil stones (caseoma)."”. Food particles and bacteria that accumulate in the cavities (crypts) on the tonsils eventually turn into cheesy, white/yellow stones with an incredibly foul odor. Chronic sinusitis, which causes constant postnasal drip, and stomach acid reflux (silent reflux) also create a perfect breeding ground for this odor. Our goal in treatment is not to mask the odor with mint gum, but to permanently eliminate the source (stones, inflammation, or acid) that produces this smell.
- Those who can't get rid of bad breath despite paying close attention to oral hygiene (brushing, flossing)
- Those who notice the person they are talking to turning their face away or taking a step back.
- Those who occasionally have tiny, foul-smelling, white/yellow pieces (stones) coming out of their throats
- Those who wake up in the morning with a bitter, poisonous taste in their mouth and a thick white coating on their tongue
- "People who constantly consume mint candies and avoid social situations out of fear of "Does my breath smell?"
Bad breath is not fate or something to be ashamed of; it's a signal of a hidden infection in the body.
I deeply understand the profound shame, guilt, and social isolation experienced by my patients who come to me with bad breath. As Dr. Nurten Küçük, my first priority is to relieve my patient of this psychological burden; because it's not your fault or an indication of dirtiness, it's entirely an anatomical or metabolic problem. To find a solution, I perform a detailed olfactory mapping using a camera (endoscope), starting from the inside of the nose and going all the way to the vocal cords. If the problem is stones in the tonsil pockets, I flatten these pockets with laser/radiofrequency (cryptolysis), or if the odor is very persistent, I completely remove the tonsils to eradicate the problem at its root. Seeing my patient wake up from that nightmare they've endured for years, and experience that confident moment when they can speak to people without hesitation, even whispering, is one of the most rewarding aspects of our profession.
Endoscopic Olfactory Mapping
To locate the source of the odor, the inside of the nose (sinusitis/adenoids), the throat (tonsil stones), and the larynx (reflux irritation) are painlessly examined in detail using a camera.
Tonsil (Caseoma) Removal
If the source of the odor is tonsil stones, these stones are microscopically vacuumed away. To prevent recurrence, the deep cavities where the stones accumulate are reduced in size (cryptolysis) using radiofrequency waves and sealed.
Holistic and Lasting Solution
If the source is gastric reflux or sinusitis, targeted drug treatments for these conditions are initiated. The patient is taught proper tongue brushing (cleaning the back of the tongue) and gargling techniques to make the process permanent for life.
Frequently Asked Questions
I brush my teeth very well and I went to the dentist and he said there's no problem. Why is the odor still there?
Because the source of the odor isn't inside your mouth (your teeth), but deeper down; in your throat (tonsils), stomach, or sinuses. A toothbrush can't reach these areas. The odor is caused by sulfur gases produced in these deeper regions, which rise up your windpipe and exit through your mouth. For a real solution, it's essential that an ENT specialist examines this deep anatomy.
Can tonsil stones (caseum) be removed at home with a cotton swab?
Absolutely not! Many patients try to remove these stones by squeezing their tonsils with cotton swabs or other hard objects in front of a mirror. This is extremely dangerous; it can tear the tonsil tissue, causing serious bleeding, further infection and abscess formation, and the resulting widening of the cavities, leading to the accumulation of even more stones in the future. Cleaning must be done by an ENT specialist using a vacuum device.
Do I need to have my tonsils removed to get rid of bad breath?
Not always. First, the stones are removed, and attempts are made to shrink the cavities with radiofrequency. However, if your tonsils are completely perforated like a sponge, if the stones have penetrated deep into the gland, and if the odor persists despite all treatments, then yes; "Tonsillectomy" (Tonsil Surgery) is the most definitive and guaranteed method to eliminate bad breath forever.
Can stomach diseases cause bad breath?
Yes, it can be quite serious. Specifically, the presence of a bacterium called "Helicobacter pylori" in the stomach, or the leakage of acid and undigested food odors up into the esophagus (reflux) due to a loose stomach valve, is the most common cause of bad breath after ENT-related odors. If no problems are found during an ENT examination, the patient is referred to the Gastroenterology (Stomach) department without delay.
